The shop

A barbershop, not a salon.

We took the old hardware store on Milwaukee because it had the light and the length — one long room, eight stations against the window, and enough sidewalk out front that the line on a Saturday never bothers anybody.

There is no colour bar, no processing chair, no forty-minute wait while something develops. Everything on the menu is one appointment, start to finish, with the same barber the whole way through. That is why we can hold half the floor for whoever walks through the door.

Sinatra on the speakers is a cliché, so it is usually whatever Kofi feels like. The coffee is free and honestly not great. Bring your kid, bring your dad — Sal has cut three generations of the same family and would like a fourth.

House rules

  • 01 Walk in wheneverHalf the chairs stay open for the door. If you have five minutes and a barber is free, you are getting cut.
  • 02 No deposit, everBooking online never asks for a card. Miss the chair without telling us and there is a flat $15 on your next visit. That is the whole policy.
  • 03 Fifteen minutes late is a walk-inWe hold your chair a quarter hour. After that you keep your place in the walk-in line, which on a Tuesday is usually no wait at all.
  • 04 Cash and card both fineTip your barber however you like. There is an ATM two doors down and nobody here will pretend the card reader is broken.

The menu

Three things,
done properly.

Prices are what you pay. Tax and tip on top, cash or card, no package to sign up for.

Behind the chairs

Five barbers.
Pick one, or don't.

Everyone here cuts everything on the menu. If you have no preference, take the first available — it is almost always the shortest wait.

Chair 1

Dominic Ruiz

Master barber · owner · 19 years behind a chair

Opened the shop in 2019 after eleven years on Fullerton. Cuts fast, talks less than you would expect, and has never once let a client leave with a soft neckline.

  • Bald fades
  • Grey blending
  • The two-minute consult
Chair 3

Wes Abernathy

Barber · 8 years behind a chair

Texas-trained, straight-razor obsessive. If you want the hot towel shave done the long way — lather, strop, two passes, cold finish — Wes is the appointment to make.

  • Hot towel shaves
  • Beard architecture
  • Classic side parts
Chair 4

Kofi Mensah

Barber · 12 years behind a chair

Came up cutting in Rogers Park. Best hands in the shop on textured and coily hair, and the one everyone else asks when a lineup has to be perfect.

  • Textured cuts
  • Sponge twists
  • Razor lineups
Chair 6

Sal Petrangelo

Barber · 26 years behind a chair

Third-generation barber, Belmont-Cragin born. Scissor-over-comb the way his grandfather taught him. Ask about the shop's original Koken chair — he found it.

  • Scissor work
  • Kids' first cuts
  • Traditional tapers
Chair 7

Ty Nakamura

Barber · 6 years behind a chair

The shop's detail cutter. Grew up drawing, which shows in the edges. Books out first on Saturdays, so if you want Ty, book earlier in the week.

  • Crop tops
  • Hard parts
  • Fringe and texture
